Sunscreen Under Makeup: How to Layer Without Pilling

The sunscreen layer has to remain a sunscreen layer. The goal is to make makeup cooperate with it—not to use less SPF so makeup looks smoother.

Daily sunscreen and complexion makeup can coexist. Most problems come from too many incompatible layers, too much rubbing, or trying to apply makeup before skincare has settled.

The order

Skincare → moisturizer as needed → sunscreen → primer if used → makeup. AAD guidance places sunscreen after other skincare and beneath makeup.

Give sunscreen a moment to settle

You do not need a rigid timer, but applying foundation immediately while the sunscreen is still moving around can create streaks. Use the time to do hair, brows or another part of your routine.

Why pilling happens

Too many polymers, silicones and thick layers can roll into little flakes when rubbed. Try reducing unnecessary skincare steps before blaming the sunscreen.

Press, do not scrub

Apply BB cream or foundation in small amounts and pat it over the sunscreen. Aggressive back-and-forth rubbing can disturb both layers.

Use powder strategically

Set areas that crease or become shiny instead of turning a dewy sunscreen completely matte with a heavy all-over powder layer.

Reapplication is the hard part

Follow sunscreen directions for reapplication, especially with outdoor exposure, swimming or sweating. Makeup-compatible sunscreen sticks, mists and powders exist, but they should not become excuses to under-apply the initial sunscreen layer.

Frequently asked questions

Does sunscreen go before or after primer?

Sunscreen goes after skincare. If you use a separate primer, it generally goes after sunscreen has settled and before makeup.

Can BB cream SPF replace sunscreen?

We recommend treating makeup SPF as supplementary because most people do not apply makeup at the same quantity used for sunscreen testing.
