Korean Skincare Layering Order: Thin to Thick, Simplified

The “thin to thick” rule is useful, but it is not more important than product directions, tolerability and keeping the routine simple.

The simplest layering rule is cleanse first, sunscreen last in skincare, and use lighter leave-on textures before heavier ones. You do not need to memorize ten steps.

The core order

Cleanser → toner/essence if used → serum or ampoule → moisturizer → sunscreen (AM) → makeup. Prescription or dermatologist-directed treatments should be used according to professional instructions.

Morning

  1. Gentle cleanse or rinse.
  2. Optional hydrating essence.
  3. One serum if needed.
  4. Moisturizer as needed.
  5. Broad-spectrum sunscreen.
  6. Makeup.

Evening

  1. Remove makeup/sunscreen.
  2. Cleanse.
  3. Optional essence.
  4. Treatment serum or ampoule.
  5. Moisturizer.

Strong actives do not need to stack

If you use exfoliating acids, retinoids or other potentially irritating products, follow directions and introduce them slowly. More layers can mean more irritation.

How to reduce pilling

Use less product, allow layers to settle, and avoid rubbing aggressively. Silicone-rich makeup over a very thick skincare stack is a common pilling setup.

A good routine is repeatable

Consistency matters more than owning every K-beauty category. Add optional steps only when they solve a clear problem.
